Balanced goals.

I previously discussed balanced goals in terms of short-, medium-, and long-term goals. The best goals are also balanced in terms of whole-life and overall wellness. Even if your main goal is weight loss, creating goals in other areas of importance in your life will create overall wellness, and help you reach your ultimate goal of weight loss by being healthier overall!

Consider goals for physical health, psychological/emotional health, spiritual health, relationship health, and employment health.

Some examples…

  • Physical health:
    • Eat every 2-3 hours
    • Exercise 3 times each week
    • Strive for 10,000 steps each day
    • Get a medical check-up, and keep up with this
    • Get a massage
    • Get enough sleep
    • Buy clothes you like and that fit well
  • Psychological/emotional health:
    • Take a day trip
    • Take a mental health day from work
    • Take time to be still and silent and notice inner thoughts, beliefs, feelings
    • Write in a journal
    • Attend to minimizing stress
    • Give yourself praise
    • Allow yourself to cry
    • Find things that make you laugh
  • Spiritual health:
    • Spend time in nature
    • Find a spiritual connection or community
    • Be aware of non-material aspects of life
    • Meditate
    • Pray
    • Read inspirational literature or listen to inspirational talks
    • Be open to not knowing
  • Relationship health:
    • Schedule regular dates with your partner
    • Schedule one-on-one time with your children
    • Call or email friends/relatives
    • Spend time with your animals
  • Employment health:
    • Take a break during the workday
    • Make quiet time to complete tasks
    • Set limits with clients and colleagues
    • Negotiate for your needs (benefits, raise)
    • Arrange work environment to be comfortable and comforting

 

Work toward goals in each of these areas over time for a more balanced life!
