Recap: Oceanside 10K with andrew :)

“if it’s raining like this tomorrow, i’m not running” (it was pouring the night before) and “we’re going to be late so we may as well not go” lol from Andrew who was about to run his first race…and 10K!  and the best one: “I forgot my running shoes” <—WHAT!!!, thank goodness he’s the same shoe size as his dad!!!

Thomas, our eldest, paid for my race registration as my mother’s day gift and as you know, running was Andrew’s mother’s day gift to me…best gifts to give me! funny because Thomas is the runner and if he lived closer he would definitely have run with us!

the morning started out great with a hearty breakfast, a cup of coffee and Andrew’s nerves in a tizzy! of course he was nervous! he didn’t really run much lol. on the other hand…my knee was sore and my hip flexor was tight lol. great match we were!

…and we were late! I took the wrong turn and ended up somewhere rural…then I started to stress. I was so close to tears thinking we were going to miss the start. :(   nothing like arriving to check-in less than 10 minutes before race time, begging for our bibs and running UPHILL to the starting line! but we made it :) pinning Andrew’s bib on was like getting him ready for his first day of kindergarten ;) I was so happy and he was so nervous hahaha :D

:D

:D

immediately before the start!

       immediately before the start!

so I kept telling Andrew how slow I run…but he didn’t realize how slow until the start of the race and he looked at me and said “that slow huh?” I laughed and said go ahead for awhile…and I did not see him until the finish line!!! lol which did not bother me in the least by the way. I wanted him to experience the day for himself :)

I had a great run myself, my knee and hip behaved and I even took a couple of pics along the way,005 …called jeff to let him know Andrew would be arriving earlier than me so he wouldn’t miss him and made sure to thank all the volunteers for their time. in my rush to the race I left our water in the car so I was very grateful there was 2 water stations!

coming up to the water station...

coming up to the water station…

as I approached the finish line all i was thinking about was that Andrew best be waiting to run out to great me and run across the finish line together! and he was. I was so excited to cross the line and hug him for his efforts and for sharing this with me. I was stunned that he did so well and can I say again how happy I was???!!! ;)

Andrew: 1:01 Denise: 1:07

Andrew: 1:01      Denise: 1:07

Andrew managed to do the first 5K in 24 minutes which I thought was quite remarkable for a non-runner! he had a great time and said that he hadn’t been told by so many people what a good job he was doing…the volunteers are so encouraging! ;)

what a great day…this was the first race where I had someone at the finish line. jeff was there as well as andrew’s girlfriend and her parents. they were there to cheer us on at the start and offer their congratulations and share in our happiness at the finish. I have an amazing short video of our finish too that I shared on FB.

I think Andrew really enjoyed himself. he experienced the runners high of completing an organized run and watching the awards ceremony afterward with inspiring men and women of all ages with incredible times right up to the age group of 85-90. :) 012

the best part? Andrew has agreed to do more races with me!

mother’s day 10K run…or how to get your son to run with you ;)

well mother’s day is my next race <—I feel foolish using the word ‘race’ considering how slow I am, but ‘organized run’ doesn’t have the same ring to it. :)  Now this race will be different…this time I will have company!!! my 20 year old son has agreed to run it with me for mother’s day but not without some badgering texts from yours truly…DSC04161

hey…ya gotta use the mom card when ya can, right??? I figured he would say no but I had to ask. then I get this…DSC04162

I was very excited when I read that! I mean, any race I enter it’s just me…alone…with no one even at the finish line… :(  so this was going to be FUN!!!

oh and I did not wait the day or two as promised…I did wait 30 minutes though ;) lol PicMonkey Collage1

Andrew’s not a runner and I run very slow so we’ll get along just fine. oh and he’s 6’4″ to my 5’4″ so even if he walks he could probably keep up with me! hahaha

I keep texting him asking if he’s running…ummm…not getting much response to that lol i’ll let you know next week how this all went down…and there will be pictures! ;o)

I on the other hand have been running just enough ;) 2, sometimes 3 times a week. I feel fine going into this run but I plan to up my mileage for the next 10K on June 2nd just to see how it’ll improve my time. ;)

do you run races solo?

have you ever cajoled someone to run with you? did it bomb? lol (i’m afraid!)

on the move…

well hello friends! I haven’t been around the blog for some time but I sure have been on facebook…too much!

as some of you may already know, from FB, we have sold our 3400 square foot home35259_408479788714_1640293_n35267_408479913714_5521949_n

and have purchased a 1052 square foot waterfront condo!!!401897_10151405361228715_680744679_n

gulp…downsizing by 2/3′s? are we crazy!?! umm, well ya but that’s besides the point! ;) a lot of people look at us like we’re nuts when we tell them what we are doing and the most common phrase is “but you’re too young to live in a condo/downsize…” ??? i had no idea there was an age thing attached to condos!?! i’m just happy that house keeping will be cut by 2/3rd’s!!!!!! and jeff is happy to be relieved of his yard maintenance, which he is supremely good at! another motivating factor to move was quick access off of the island by seaplane and BC ferries at our doorstep. and one of our boys lives in Victoria so it’s closer to him and one of my sisters lives just 35-40 away from our new home! our other son lives in Alberta and having Vancouver flights just across the pond will make travelling that much easier.

we are very excited to make this move to Nanaimo from Comox. we have been planning this since last September but seeing how I had a job i was unable to talk/post about it. once we had the house sold, and condo bought i felt comfortable to give my notice at work. then i was able to talk about it. it was too hard holding in my excitement and i’m a talker so it was stressful!!!

things i will miss about our present home and area:
>our garden! we put in a big backyard garden last year and i really enjoyed that…a lot
>my fitness room- but i made sure we bought a 2 bedroom- new fitness room :)
>the neighbourhood-such nice neighbours
>my TNT running group! love running the trails with all those positive people
>my job. have to admit, this is the most relaxed work atmosphere i have ever worked in. max flex!!!
>my running routes, especially to the beach
>i’m sure there are lots more…and i will probably discover them after we move!

i am very excited to try out downtown living :) the harbour front offers a 5K seawall for strolling, people watching, sea plane access and watching, running etc. there will be increased cruise ship activity over the years, lots of neat shops and restaurants within 2 minutes of our door and farther afield…tons of trails and nature to explore. :) oh, and lots and lots of farmer’s markets to discover!

one activity we are both excited to try is crab fishing! right from the dock that is right outside our doorstep! we will definitely buy a crab license and a trap and enjoy fresh seafood. there are also lots of islands to explore and perhaps a kayak is in our future!

the only thing i can see that may be difficult until we get use to it is, ‘the lily’. dogs are allowed…we wouldn’t have bought otherwise, but it will be a little harder than simply opening the door to put her out! we’ll manage though…besides, now i can make jeff take her out in the early mornings and late evenings siteing personal safety issues :)

what a goof!

                     what a goof!

downsizing is now in full swing here with our first yard sale last Saturday being a resounding success. lots of things sold on craigslist and to friends and neighbours. we are not ‘stuff’ people but i am still amazed at all the ‘stuff’ we do, or rather did, have. things we do not need and wonder why we bought in the first place! i can survive with very little…i do enjoy certain items like my ipad, blender, juicer and computer. i am not one who becomes emotionally attached to things or houses so this downsizing is easy for me…

i will write periodically about the big move…you may get sick of it. ;)

have any of you downsized?

how did you cope?

a lazy sunday soup day

after running 10K on saturday, i decided that yesterday was going to be a rest day for me and boy did i rest. i did absolutely nothing for most of the day. ZERO! ZIP! LAYYY-ZzzzEEE! i started to feel a bit guilty watching the dust bunnies fight for space under the sofa so i…did not vacuum! instead i decided to make a delicious soup. ;)

after rummaging around the fridge to see what i had in there…not much as i was so lazy i hadn’t even shopped for food, i saw a leek poking out of the crisper and cream???<—i never have cream but my sister was over and i had to get some for her coffee ;)  i looked in the pantry and there were potatoes…some had eyes ;) ah-ha said self, potato leek soup it is. if i were really lucky there would be some bacon in the freezer…yup, there was!

so i set about prepping for the soup and was feeling more productive (less lazy) already. :)
if you’re going to make this soup, here’s what you will need:

*a few slices bacon<—if you have a dog…don’t turn your back on the bacon!!!008

*3 potatoes(i used the equivalent in new red potatoes)
1 leek-chopped

*2 cups cream
2 tbsp butter
2 cups stock (i used beef stock)
2-3 green onion- chopped
2 garlic cloves (i used crushed garlic)
2-3 bay leaves
parsley
sea salt and pepper

PicMonkey Collage

*heat 1 tbsp oil (i use coconut oil) in pot and add chopped bacon plus a few whole slices for garnish. add the leeks next and saute for a few minutes. PicMonkey Collage1

then add the 2 tbsp’s butter, chopped green onion and salt and pepper to taste. stir together and cook for 2-3 minutes. then add bay leaf, parsley and garlic.PicMonkey Collage2

now add cream, potatoes and beef stock. 015

bring to a boil then reduce heat to a simmer and leave on until potatoes are cooked through.

we paired this soup with some nice crusty bread and a huge salad! a very satisfying meal indeed :) and the extra bacon for garnish? well, i ate those as soon as they were cooked…wouldn’t you?! ;)  PicMonkey Collage

as for the dust bunnies? well, they’re still under the sofa…after dinner i was back to lay-zzeeee and read a book all night! ;)

let me know if you make this soup

30 year high school reunion! WHAT!!!

I received a facebook message from a high school friend I stay in touch with and she asked if I wanted to be added to the high school fb group for our 30 year re-union…WHAT! 30 years!!!??? NO WAY lol…template_sidebar2

I find it so hard to believe 30 years has gone by…I only feel 27 not 47 ;)so much living has happened in those 30 years!!! marriage, children, travelling, loss of parent, wrinkles<– sigh…and because my husband was in the military, lots of postings all over the country!

i didn't end up as a hygienist but i was a dental assistant and now am a dental receptionist :D

i didn’t end up as a hygienist but i was a dental assistant and now am a dental receptionist :D

sadly, as you can see in the above write up, i was wrapped up in ‘diets’ then and it took me 29 years more to get that right!

i will admit that high school was not my best time. i was so self-conscious of my appearance which, incidentally was absolutely fine looking back, and i always felt like an outsider. i still harbour anxiety about those years that i academically know i need to release but emotionally it still has a way of finding its way into my psyche. i think because i was spoiled by my parents- i received a car for my 16th birthday- and i was self-conscious, it came off as though i thought i was better than others. if they only knew!!! i am not imagining this as years later, someone told my father that some referred to me as ‘rich bitch’ in high school. i was already married with kids but that STUNG and i think it hurt my dad too. :( I don’t think they meant it maliciously but it was not nice to hear especially when it was not true. I was definitely NOT part of the ‘click’.

anyhow, i have moved on<– umm have i ??? but i am unable to go to the re-union anyway. it’s in NB and I live in BC and unfortunately I am already planning a visit to NB in May. i would have liked to see a few people and maybe I will on the May long weekend!

it wasn’t all bad of course. i loved the people in my spare, it was a good group of people with no motives. my teachers were, for the most part, friendly and nice. I was not a stellar student lol but I managed ok. i still keep in touch with one girl, denise, and her husband, they actually introduced me to my husband :D . we had our 1st two boys together, not planned but it was nice to share that, then they went on to have a daughter :) . we don’t talk often and then mostly on facebook but i always feel connected to her and anytime we get to see each other we pick up where we left off. ♥

it’s weird to be thrust back into the past when i work so hard on living in the present and going full force into the future. however, since we are a product of our experiences perhaps it is a good idea to pause and reflect and learn. ;)

do you have good memories or bad memories of high school?

do you look forward to your reunions?

palate pleasing potatoes! :) and Fitness Blender.com

hey all…thought i’d share these yummy little ‘tators I made for dinner last night. they were really very good! paired with my grass-fed beef burger and a salad this made for a delicious meal.
**saw similar potato recipe in Prevention magazine but I doctored mine up ;) 009

i used new red potatoes, boiled them until they were fork tender. i then placed them on a parchment lined roasting pan and, using a potato masher, squished them down gently. 005

then i mixed together – greek yogurt, green onion, seasoning of your choice, i used 21 seasoning salute from trader joes, and a dash of sea salt. 006

top each potato with a bit of the mixture and add grated white chedder. 007

broil until the cheese melts and browns. 008

HOW COULD I FORGET ABOUT CRISPY BACON!?! lol once these were made i thought how much better these would have tasted with some yummy bacon crisped up and crumbled into the mix…oh well, next time. <–oh and there will be a next time YUM!  ;)

**now i have to quickly mention the workout site i have recently discovered. some of you may have already seen some postings on my FB page but for those of you who didn’t…you must check out Fitness Blender.com. Link HERE. i am always on the look out for free work outs and trust me there are loads of them out there in cyber land. i get quite a few from pages i follow and most recently from the fitness blender site. i like guided w/o’s and have especially been on the lookout for upper body strength/dumbbell w/o’s. since i stumbled onto this site have found many, many upper body routines and any other routine i am after. there are so many uploaded that i could w/o everyday for a month (or 6) and not repeat a single one. i encourage you to check out their website and FB PAGE for excellent routines to fit any fitness level.004
**i was not asked to promote their site, i just love to pass on info to all of you to increase your w/o potential for free! :) …although if they wanted to send me a free t-shirt, i’d accept :p let them know i sent you their way if you ‘like’ them on FB ;)

do you love new potatoes as much as i do?

did you check out Fitness Blender.com?

juicing for a full day? …yikes!

i was watching ‘fat, sick and nearly dead’ a documentary about joe cross and his 60 day juice fast last night, i turned to my husband and asked him if he was up for the challenge of a one day juice fast. he opted out…though he did drink every juice I made. i juice almost once a day anyway so how hard could this be…for one day that is, i was ready to find out!

i did what any other fast thinking facebook page admin would do when they come up with an idea…I posted this on my page:
“hey, guess what i’m going to do tomorrow…i’m going to do a one day juice fast…just to see if I can :) i will make 4 different juices throughout the day…could be interesting or scary :/”
lol, well that made it real! i immediately got positive responses and i set to planning out my menu.

***to be clear – i was not doing this for weight loss, i am experimenting on myself, for myself. i personally believe that the fastest way to get the maximum amount of nutrients into my system is by juicing.
***juicing is different from blending. juicing extracts the juice from the produce eliminating the fibre so you are left with all the high density micro-nutrients which are absorbed into the blood stream almost right away. talk about getting your daily servings in :)
*** blending retains the fibre and allows for slower absorption but as a result, you do lose some nutrients through the digestion process. <–nothing to worry about though so long as you are using good quality foods.

***i do one or both daily for maximum health and wellness…and because i love them both. :)

7:00 - i started the morning with hot water, lime and ginger. :) **EEEK no coffee? i forgot about that little tidbit!!! well, let’s see how that goes lol ;) 012

8:00 - juice #1 (breakfast) - carrot, celery, kale, 1/2 large beet, knuckle sized piece of ginger, 1/2 lime, pear and bunch of cilantro and parsleyPicMonkey Collage

10:15 - weird how i am not missing my 2 cups of coffee this morning!!!<—that could suddenly change!

10:45 – juice #2 (snack) – carrot, celery, parsley and cucumberPicMonkey Collage2

11:10 - after my snack i went for a 5K run…i was a bit concerned initially as i thought i would not have the energy but i was pleasantly surprised at how easy the it was. it didn’t feel any different from any other run really.
*i usually eat a bowl of oatmeal before my runs…PicMonkey Collage3

1:40 - juice #3 (lunch) - tomato, spinach, red pepper, broccolette, lime and cilantro<–tasted like a v-8 only much better without all the chemicals, high sodium and BPA container it comes in!PicMonkey Collage5

3:10 - sipping on hot water and lime. the thought is crossing my mind of ditching this idea at dinner time and having a big salad. i feel great and full of energy but i suspect that has more to do with the psychology of this experiment than it does with the extra juicing. ;)

3:45 - anyone that knows me knows that i eat a lot of food and i eat often. i’m finding myself with free time not spent eating/preparing!  *when i say a lot of food i mean nutrient dense foods that aid my body…not empty calories that make my body sick…well…sometimes i have ‘junk’ too, but in limited quantities ;)

5:15 - hmmm, struggling now with not eating for the rest of the night. really considering just eating a plant-based dinner to finish off the day…i feel a need to masticate!

6:15 - salad and sautéed veggies it is :D lol well at least i made it to dinner time. ;) PicMonkey Collage6

amazing that people can do solely juice for so long…i suppose if i had an illness, was overweight etc then perhaps my motivation might be different. luckily i am healthy<– at least to my knowledge…who knows what those cells are doing inside–>i juice daily and i eat a predominantly clean diet. so even though i did not make it through the whole day i think i will make this a weekly habit—>a 1/2 day ’fast’ will be a healthy addition to an already healthy way of life for me. :)

*i often get asked what type of juicer i have…here’s mine: Breville 032

i think this type of juicer is best suited for me as i don’t want to spend time chopping everything up into pieces. this one has a large chute to accommodate half apples, whole cucumbers etc. it does have high rpm’s though so the greens are spun through very quickly thereby limiting the amount of juice extraction. i stuff my greens into the chute tightly so that they are densely packed and this helps with the juicing.  if you really want to extract the most out of your greens and/or want to make wheatgrass juice, then you will want to do your research for good juicer with lower rpm’s. the omega juicers have been recommended to me and i may invest in one down the road.

have you done a juice fast? how long?

could you commit to juicing for 60 days like joe cross did? i don’t think i could
